The Benefits of Power Seat Functions on Power Wheelchairs

Power seat functions enable users to adjust their position easily and independently throughout the day. These small but frequent changes in posture are essential for maintaining a persons comfort and improving seating tolerance, which refers to the ability to remain seated for extended periods without pain, excessive fatigue, or the frequent need to transfer out of the chair.

Some examples of common power seat functions are shown in the image below (from right to left): anterior tilt, posterior tilt, backrest recline, leg elevation, and vertical lift.

Below is a summary of these functions and examples of how they are commonly used in everyday life.

Anterior tilt

This function gently tips the seat forward. It helps with everyday tasks such as reaching benches and cupboards, preparing meals, grooming, and in some cases making it easier to stand up or transfer forward.

Posterior tilt

This function tilts the chair backwards and shifts weight from the seat onto the backrest. It is very important for protecting the skin, preventing pressure sores, improving comfort, reducing tiredness, and helping the user feel more stable when moving over uneven ground.

Backrest recline

This function allows the backrest to lean backwards, opening up the hips and trunk. It helps relieve pressure, reduce pain and muscle tightness, improve comfort during long periods of sitting, and may make breathing and digestion easier by reducing pressure on the abdomen.

Power leg elevation

This function lifts and straightens the legs. It helps reduce muscle tightness, manage swelling in the legs, improve circulation, keep joints moving well, and increase comfort, especially when used together with tilt and recline.

Vertical lift

This function raises or lowers the height of the seat. It makes transfers easier by matching the height of the bed, toilet, or car seat, helps with reaching benches and work surfaces, and allows the user to sit at eye level with others for easier conversation and social interaction.
